Personal Thoughts:
This is a beautifully traditional ’54 Les Paul Custom Reissue and one of the most distinctive early Custom specifications Gibson ever produced. The all-mahogany construction, ebony fingerboard, gold hardware and multi-ply binding give it the classic “Black Beauty” look, but the pickup configuration sets it apart completely from later humbucker-equipped Customs.
The Alnico V staple pickup in the neck has a clearer, more open and almost hi-fi quality compared with a conventional P-90, while the bridge P-90 brings more bite, midrange and aggression. Together they give the guitar a very different voice from a typical Les Paul Custom, with more immediacy and rawness while still retaining the weight and sustain of the mahogany build.
The wraparound bridge and substantial ’50s neck profile also add to the vintage feel, making this a really characterful instrument rather than simply a cosmetic reissue. A superb Custom Shop recreation of one of Gibson’s most important early Les Paul Custom designs.
Condition Report:
Excellent condition. Presents very cleanly overall with only light signs of careful use. No significant wear or damage to mention. Supplied with its original Gibson Custom Shop Lifton-style hardshell case, certificate of authenticity and associated documentation.
