The Sovtek Green Russian Big Muff is a legendary fuzz/distortion pedal produced in Russia during the 1990s after Electro-Harmonix founder Mike Matthews moved manufacturing to the former USSR under the Sovtek brand name. It is highly revered by both guitarists and bassists for its massive low-end power, grittier midrange, and smoother, more overdrive-like gain compared to traditional American Big Muffs.
Characteristics of the Vintage Original
- The Sound: Unlike the heavily "scooped" mids of the USA-made Big Muffs, the Green Russian keeps a tighter, more pronounced mid-frequency profile. Its unique capacitor circuit allows more low-end bass frequencies to pass through, creating a massive "wall of sound" or sludgy grunge tone.
- The Build: Housed in a giant, heavy-duty sheet metal chassis painted in an army-green finish with rugged plastic knobs. They famously originally shipped in stamped military-style wooden crates.
- Condition: This pedal shows lots of exterior players wear but is fully intact, the interior of this unit is in perfect shape, it has been tested and is fully functional
- Notable Users: David Gilmour (Pink Floyd), Dan Auerbach (The Black Keys), and Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth)
