Personal Thoughts:

The ’57 Goldtop is one of the most honest Les Pauls ever made — no flame, no flash, just wood, wire, and tone. This 2024 Custom Shop reissue absolutely nails what makes these guitars so special.

The combination of a mahogany body, plain maple top, and P-90s delivers that unmistakable early Les Paul voice: fat, woody lows, rich midrange growl, and a snarling top end that cleans up beautifully when you roll the volume back. It’s raw, dynamic, and incredibly responsive — exactly what a great Goldtop should be.

The Custom Shop have really refined these in recent years. Neck carve feels substantial without being cumbersome, the finish has that soft vintage glow rather than an overly bright gold, and the overall resonance is immediately obvious the moment you pick it up.

This is a player’s Les Paul first and foremost, but one that also sits comfortably in a high-end collection.
