Crom — Handmade Fuzz/Drive Pedal (Caroline Guitar Company)
If you've spent any time chasing the sound of a Tone Bender or a Muff, you already know what Crom is about. That's where this started — those classic sputtering, singing fuzz circuits that made records sound like records. But instead of another straight clone, Crom takes the foundation and fixes the thing that always bothered us: the scooped midrange that sounds huge in your bedroom and disappears the second a drummer shows up.
The tone control here — we call it Mountain — is borrowed from 1950s Fender tweed amp design. It works differently than the typical fuzz tone stack. Rather than cutting you out of the mix, it interacts directly with the gain (Sword) control to keep you in it. Low gain settings are tight and defined, with actual note clarity. Push the gain up and it gets aggressive and thick in a way that holds together through a full band.
Then there's the Turbo switch, and this is where it gets useful. Running into a clean amp or clean channel? Turbo on — full gain, full power, the whole thing opens up. Stacking with another drive, or running into an amp that's already breaking up? Turbo off — the bass tightens, the response firms up, and Crom behaves more like a classic 70s fuzz-drive that pushes what's in front of it without turning to mud.
BC184 transistors. Hand-assembled in South Carolina. Built by people who play guitar.
It's a fuzz pedal that works for actual gigs, not just for sounding cool on its own.
