Vintage German carved acoustic guitar. “Orchestra” Max Zimmer

I have consulted various specialist GDR Archtop and Carved Jazz guitar collectors about the maker of this lovely old guitar. The general opinion is that it was made by a German luthier called Max Zimmer. The neck end, headstock shape and the shape of the f-holes are reasonable clues to the origin.

However, it is unusual as it has an “o” hole in addition to the f-holes. These were introduced in an attempt to increase the volume. In the case of this Jazz guitar, it has worked. It is loud, yet has a lovely bright tone.

The back of the body is striking. It gives away the luthier’s original skills as a violin maker.

The action is pretty good at 3-3.5mm. I suspect the bridge has been replaced, but the rest of the guitar looks like it’s original.

A collector might have the guitar re-finished as it has scratches all over the body. I like it as it is. It lends authenticity and a whole chunk of mojo.

Condition:

The headstock is in good condition. The tuners all work well. The nut is similar to the ones used on Hofner’s and could do with replacement. The neck is 3 laminated of mainly Maple. The back of the neck is in good condition and free from dings or marks. The Rosewood fingerboard is in good condition. The body top has scratches all over and there are two hairline cracks. One is in the top left bout (about 4cm long). The other one is in the lower right bout (about 10cm). They don’t move under pressure. The carved top is Spruce. The bottom of the body has some grazes close to where the strap pin should be. There is no strap pin. There is no pick guard either.

The white-black-white binding is all intact on the front and the back. The f-holes and the O-hole are all bound too.

In conclusion, this is an unusual GDR solid carved top which has stood the test of time well. It sounds great and is rare enough to grace a collection.

If you believe this guitar is made by another luthier, I’d be pleased to hear from you.
