AER BassCube 2 (bass combo boutique 550W) "re-customised"
- 3 salidas de DI: maestra, para canal 1 y 2;
- Funda acolchada original gruesa (4mm).

AER BassCube 2 (DISCONTINUED)
- AER (Audio Electric Research) is a German brand dedicated exclusively to manufacturing boutique, hand-built, high-fidelity (HiFi) amplifiers—specifically for acoustic instruments. This model stands out further due to its dual-channel design: one channel is tailored for double bass/acoustic bass, while the other is designed for electric bass.
- This is a professional-grade unit offering immense power, comprehensive features, and excellent tonal characteristics, all housed in a compact, portable cabinet constructed from 18mm (0.70”) Finnish-Baltic birch plywood (similar to vintage VOX cabinets). It is finished in a black, water-based acrylic paint with a textured, speckled appearance.
- Power: 550 watts (500W RMS) at 8 ohms. This high-end, two-channel bass amplifier features versatile inputs—each equipped with both a 1/4" (6.3mm) jack and an XLR (Canon) connector. The channels can be used simultaneously, selected individually (with independent mute functions), or toggled via an external TRS footswitch (not included).
- Each channel includes 6 LED-indicated presets, covering settings for passive piezo pickups, active magnetic pickups, line-level signals, 9V-powered electronics, microphones, 48V phantom power, and E/P (electret/piezo) sources.
- 2-way coaxial speaker system: a 12" (30cm) "Bass Plus" woofer with a neodymium magnet, paired with a 1" (25mm) high-frequency (HF) transducer. The crossover frequency is set at 3.9 kHz (12 dB/octave).
- The BassCube 2 has proven to deliver exceptional performance, reproducing the sound of a double bass with great authenticity. Its perfectly balanced analog sound design covers the entire frequency spectrum smoothly and proportionally, ensuring the timbre remains consistently clear, crisp, and transparent. Powerful and well-defined—all without any effort! Its two channels feature identical configurations, allowing for the convenient connection of two different instruments; it is also specifically designed for electric bass. Whether played with a bow or *pizzicato*, the BassCube 2 reproduces the instrument's authentic sound, characterized by a round, open tone. Every detail—from the friction of the bow against the strings to the placement of fingers on the fretboard—is captured with absolute fidelity.
- A wealth of parameters and endless configuration possibilities for volume, tone, and effects: a three-band parametric EQ for both channels; a "mid-cut/treble-boost" color filter; a compressor with adjustable ratio and threshold; and a notch filter with controls for frequency, level, and bandwidth. (Note: To ensure quick identification and clear visual distinction across the extensive control section, the original, tiny, bland, and often indistinguishable plastic knobs—two of which were missing—have been replaced. The new knobs are made of rubber, three times larger, and color-coded for intuitive use: blue and red for channels, light blue and pink for gain, purple for channel master tone, a gradient from black through grays to white for EQ (low to high frequencies), green for the compressor, yellow for the auxiliary channel, and black for the notch filters, among others.) Plus, additional parameters are selectable via microswitches (!!!).
- 3 DI outputs: a master output, plus individual outputs for channels 1 and 2.
- RCA auxiliary input/output (acting as a "third channel," with adjustable volume and tone on the front panel).
- Monitor output. Tuner output, line out, subwoofer output, headphone jack, insert points (master, as well as for channels 1 and 2), and a footswitch connection (for muting channels and toggling between "solo" and "ensemble" modes). It also features a "ground lift" switch and an output volume control for each of the three built-in DI (direct injection) boxes, along with other specific, micro-switch-selectable parameters.
- Heavy-duty power/mains cable with a secure, Speakon-style locking connector (!!!). Includes both the original cable and an additional, longer one.
- Original, thick (4mm) padded cover.
- Given a known drawback of this gear—the control knobs on the front panel are highly exposed (in fact, I bought it with some potentiometers already damaged, which explains why some knobs are missing or even broken)—I designed and adapted a removable plastic cover that protects the entire control panel. It attaches using small, black neodymium magnets (cleverly concealed within the cabinet). The cover can also be magnetically attached to the side of the amplifier, keeping it close at hand and preventing it from getting lost. (This is on the side opposite the ventilation intake and internal cooling fans.) The padded cover fits a bit more snugly, but it works perfectly with this custom addition (it has a specific orientation, with an opening for the handle). Furthermore, I added large, durable black plastic corner protectors (similar to those found on Markbass gear)—a feature missing from the factory design that helps address the aforementioned vulnerability. With these corners and the custom cover, the unit is now much better protected. (Honestly, I don’t understand why these features aren't included as standard, especially given the price point—and considering they are now even being produced with finishes in various fine hardwoods...)
- The same can be said for the characteristic external foam, which features die-cut lettering that further weakens the bottom-right section... On my unit, this foam arrived damaged and has since degraded in a truly nasty way (as is typical, it "crystallizes" and breaks down into black dust/flakes over time). Rather than replacing it with an original part—which costs a staggering €80 (!!!)—I swapped it out for acoustic fabric from the German brand Akustikstoff, specifically designed to filter and contain low frequencies. It’s a thinner, satin-like material in a pleasing "signal yellow" (they offer more colors now), which performs the same function—and is actually present! (As mentioned earlier, it’s common to see these amps missing this protective layer, leaving only the metal grille exposed). I secured it using internal Velcro, which withstands intense low-frequency vibrations without causing any unwanted rattling from screws or the grille itself. The material is acoustically transparent, ensuring no loss of power and no alteration to the tone.
- Compact dimensions: 40cm x 40cm x 36.5cm (15.70" x 15.70" x 14.00"), with a manageable, portable weight of 20.00 kg (44.00 lbs). It features rubber feet on two sides: the bottom and the side where the vent is located.
- Serial number: 058000207; Germany (Velbert, Ruhr/Fuldabrück; 2014). At the time, these were officially imported into Spain by Enrique Keller with a retail price of €3,950 (!!!!!!).
- Includes a printed quick-start guide (in English) and a manual (in German)—both of which are hard to come by.
- In perfect working order; cosmetic condition: 20/10 :D
