This 1927 Gibson L-3 is the best playing round hole archtop of its kind I’ve ever had in the shop. It’s all original, completely crack free and very clean for a guitar that’s nearly a hundred years old. It plays well enough that you’ll want to pick it up every day.
How It Plays
The neck angle is great, so the guitar plays with nice low action on its original bridge. That’s very rare on these. Most L-3s from this period need a neck reset or a modified bridge to get the action down, and this one doesn’t need either. The frets are in great shape. It’s lightweight and small, so it sits comfortably on your lap, and it’s a real delight to play.
The Sound
It has a nice dry, woody tone. Notes come out quick and clear, with the focused, slightly boxy character you get from an early round hole archtop. It’s well suited to blues, old-time and early jazz, whether you’re playing chords or single lines. The light build helps it respond to a light touch, and it opens up nicely when you dig in.
Condition
There are some light scuffs and dings here and there, which is normal for its age. Overall, it’s a very clean guitar. It’s all original and totally crack free.
Case
It comes with its original hard case. None of the latches or hinges are broken. The case has some light wear, but it’s in good shape.
The Bottom Line
A 1927 L-3 that’s all original, crack free and still plays with low action on the original bridge is hard to find. If you’ve wanted an early Gibson archtop that you can actually play, this is a really great guitar.
