Key Differences

  • Pitch and Transposition: When you play a written 'C' on an A clarinet, it sounds as a concert A (a minor third lower than written, or a half-step lower than the \(\text{B}\flat\) clarinet). A \(\text{B}\flat\) clarinet sounds a whole step lower than written.
  • Size: The A clarinet is about 1 centimeter (or roughly an inch) longer than the \(\text{B}\flat\) clarinet.
  • Timbre: The A clarinet is often described as having a slightly warmer, darker, and deeper tone, while the \(\text{B}\flat\) clarinet sounds brighter.
  • Range: The A clarinet extends one semitone lower in the absolute low register due to its extra length.

A Buffet R13 A clarinet from the 1965–1966 era (serial numbers roughly in the 85,000 to 95,000 range) belongs to Buffet's celebrated "Golden Era," prized for its dense wood and rich, focused tone.

Key Characteristics of 1965–1966 R13 Clarinets

  • Tone and Wood: Crafted from aged, tight-grained grenadilla wood that produces a dark, resonant, and projecting sound.
  • Acoustics: Features Robert Carrée’s pioneering poly-cylindrical bore design, which sets the standard for professional clarinets.
  • Keywork: Typically found with nickel or silver-plated key mechanisms that feature a classic, responsive vintage feel.
