The “Black Smoker” brand is brought to you by Black Cloud Co., Ltd., whose workshop is located at the foot of the mountains in Nagano Prefecture.

Founded by Shinichi Kuroiwa, the company’s CEO and luthier, this brand is the result of his generously applying the skills he honed over many years of design and craftsmanship at a major guitar workshop.

With a team of just three—Mr. Kuroiwa, Mr. Yanagisawa, whom he trusts implicitly, and one other—this ultra-select, elite team operates one of Japan’s premier guitar workshops, renowned for its exceptional quality.

Manufactured under a policy of releasing only instruments that meet strict quality standards—despite extremely limited production runs—

these guitars have already garnered overwhelming support from numerous artists, both professional and amateur.

And now, Black Smoker presents a special series: one that upholds tradition while offering a higher level of playability and an even more refined sound.

The “TRAD MASTER Series,” featuring an aged finish, has arrived!

The model we’ve received this time is a TL-type guitar based on the Black Smoker “DELTA.”

Specs include an ash body and a rosewood fingerboard, both featuring a “Light Aged” finish.

The subtle dents, scratches, and peeling paint give it a character that looks as though it has truly weathered the test of time.

Although it’s hard to capture in photos, the dense weather checking adds to the atmosphere, creating a finish that really makes you want to own it.

When we spoke with Mr. Kuroiwa about the finish, he mentioned that it’s extremely thin, making it “prone to weather checking.”

In fact, he told us that even after leaving it in the cold factory environment for just one night, weather checking had already set in by the next day.

Of course, the more you play it, the more the finish will change—and compared to all-lacquer models from other manufacturers, this is a guitar whose future evolution you’ll truly look forward to!

The rest of the specs are relatively standard, featuring a 3-way selector switch, one volume control, and one tone control. The Telecaster-style body features body contouring for a better fit against the body.

The Black Smoker’s original pickups offer excellent response and possess that signature Telecaster sparkle.

The high and low frequencies—which have a distinct presence thanks to the ash body—sound incredibly satisfying, fully capitalizing on the crisp clarity of single-coil pickups.

Yet the sound remains full-bodied and boasts exceptional clarity. There’s no lack of frequency response from high to low, and it pairs exceptionally well with overdrive, of course.

The response to volume control is also excellent. Even with the overdrive cranked up, adjusting the gain at your fingertips is incredibly smooth.

When played in an ensemble, it effectively fills in the frequency ranges lacking in other instruments, so simply having a Black Smoker guitar in your lineup elevates your band’s sound to the next level.

As evidenced by the fact that it’s favored by numerous session musicians, there’s no doubt that it receives outstanding reviews, particularly for its “sound.”

This is a model that takes Black Smoker—a brand rarely found in stores and thus seldom available for trial—to a whole new level.

Why not make it your lifelong companion? We highly recommend you consider it.
