Sugi Guitars: The pinnacle of Japanese high-end craftsmanship.

Founded in 2002 by Makoto Sugimoto—one of Japan’s foremost guitar builders, who spent a quarter-century crafting electric guitars at major guitar manufacturers—this brand was created to bring his vision of the ideal electric guitar to life, drawing on his extensive career experience.

At a workshop in Matsumoto—the “Mecca of musical instruments”—a team of elite craftsmen gathered under Sugimoto’s name forms Sugi Guitars, handling everything from wood procurement to woodworking, design, finishing, and setup.

The used model we’ve just received isn’t the standard DS496, but rather the DS499, which catches the eye with its unique design.

Those familiar with the USA-made Rainmaker might find that name more familiar, but this model is made in Japan.

Although its body shape differs significantly from existing guitars, it has been surprisingly well-received and is already beloved by a wide range of guitarists.

It was designed with guitarists who play rhythm guitar in bands—such as those in guitar-vocal duos—in mind, and its simple 3-way control system allows for versatile sound shaping.

That said, it naturally possesses the versatility to accommodate any playing style.

In terms of wood specifications, it features a solid alder body and a maple neck. This particular model has a maple fingerboard.

The well-balanced sound of the alder body is complemented by a quick response, resulting in a tone with excellent clarity and high resolution.

It is equipped with two Sugi-original pickups—a TL-type in the front and a humbucker in the rear—a rare combination.

The bright, well-separated sound when mixed is of exceptional quality, and the humbucker’s character never overpowers the mix.

It’s meticulously tuned to produce a clear and beautiful tone.

The coil-tap function can be activated using the Tone pot’s push/push switch, allowing for even more nuanced tone control.

Instead of a string guide, it features GOTOH H.A.P.M. tuners. Not only can each string be set to the optimal height on its own tuner, but the locking tuners also ensure stable tuning.

With a vintage-inspired style, this is a must-see for guitarists seeking top-tier quality!

It’s the ultimate model that every contemporary guitarist should own.

[Condition]

It shows minimal overall signs of use and is in excellent condition.

There are no noticeable scratches, making this a model we can wholeheartedly recommend even to those looking for a brand-new instrument.

The frets show almost no wear—90% of their original depth remains—so the guitar has plenty of life left.

We have confirmed that the truss rod functions properly.
