Ludwig's Downbeat configuration in Classic Maple: a 20" bass drum, 12" rack tom, and 14" floor tom, in Classic Olive Pearl. These are the sizes of the kits on all those early-'60s records, and Classic Maple is the shell that was on them: 3-ply maple and poplar with reinforcement rings, warm and punchy without the huge sustain of a modern thin shell. A 20" kick is easy to tune fat at low volume and fits in a hatchback, which is why the Downbeat is the jazz, indie, and small-club kit.
