The Southern Jumbo (SJ) was introduced in 1942 as a more luxurious version of the J-45, originally designed for musicians who favored Southern American music.
From its introduction through around 1962, the Southern Jumbo featured a round-shoulder body. Around 1962–1963, the design changed to a square-shoulder body with a large pickguard reminiscent of the Hummingbird.

This is a 2016 Gibson Custom Shop Southern Jumbo VOS, offered here in used condition and featuring a popular vintage-inspired specification.
The Southern Jumbo has long been popular for its luxurious appointments, including the double-parallelogram fingerboard inlays, crown headstock inlay, multiple body purfling, fingerboard binding, and an inlaid Gibson logo on the headstock. These details give the model the appearance and character expected from a more luxurious version of the J-45.
The large tortoiseshell-style pickguard and classic Gibson appointments create an instantly recognizable and highly attractive appearance. The Southern Jumbo has also been associated with artists such as Woody Guthrie and Masayoshi Yamazaki, further contributing to its iconic image.
The guitar produces a punchy, dry, and powerful sound. It responds particularly well to aggressive strumming, while its clear and dynamic character also makes it highly effective for sophisticated fingerpicking.

The Solid Sitka Spruce top and Solid Mahogany back and sides provide the classic combination of clarity, warmth, and strong midrange presence. The short 628.65mm scale length also contributes to the comfortable playing feel and distinctive Gibson response.

There are some fine scratches and minor signs of use, but the guitar remains in very good overall condition. The playing condition is also good.

An L.R.Baggs Element VTC pickup has been installed, making the guitar ready for live performance while retaining its natural acoustic character.
This is a particularly attractive Southern Jumbo with the classic Gibson look, punchy vintage-style tone, and luxurious appointments that have made the model so popular.
