2023 Lowden F-50 - Master Grade Koa #26934

Some guitars possess a beauty that invites you to pause before playing the first note. This 2023 Lowden F 50 in Master Grade Koa is one of them. Across its top, back, and sides, luminous shades of honey, amber, and copper mingle with dark ribbons of grain and rippling figure. There is remarkable depth to this wood, with broad bands of curl intersecting finer, wandering grain lines. The graceful Lowden silhouette gives that natural artistry a beautifully proportioned canvas.

George Lowden began making guitars professionally in 1974, developing an individual approach to body design, bracing, and voicing that would become unmistakably his own. His collaborations with musicians including Richard Thompson, Alex de Grassi, and Pierre Bensusan reflect his lasting influence on acoustic music, giving expressive players instruments capable of supporting their distinctive musical voices. The 50 Series carries that philosophy into a particularly refined realm of Master Grade woods and meticulous craftsmanship.

An all koa instrument brings an especially enticing personality to that tradition. Koa is prized for a combination of focused articulation, warm midrange, and sweet treble shimmer, making this configuration an appealing choice for players who love detail without sacrificing intimacy. Paired with Lowden’s full, responsive voice, it offers a compelling platform for lyrical fingerstyle, expressive chord work, and delicate accompaniment. It is a combination that invites space between phrases, allowing the character of each note to become part of the music.

The appointments frame the koa with exceptional taste. Ebony bindings draw a dark, clean outline around the body, while the ebony arm rest bevel softens the contact beneath the picking arm. An abalone rosette introduces flashes of blue and green against the top’s golden warmth. Fine maple purflings outline the ebony fingerboard, and the sculpted rosewood bridge adds another beautifully restrained organic detail. Gold Gotoh 510 tuning machines with ebony buttons complete a palette that feels rich, cohesive, and entirely at home with the wood.

The five piece mahogany and rosewood neck features Lowden’s GL Standard profile, with a 25.59 inch, 650mm scale length and a 1.77 inch, 45mm nut width. Bridge spacing measures 2 7/32 inches, or 56mm, offering welcome room for articulate fingerwork. Weighing 5 pounds even, this guitar also includes an LR Baggs Anthem pickup for amplified performance and an Ameritage hardshell case.

This previously owned 2023 example is in excellent condition, with only light pick scuffs on the clear pickguard. Beautifully preserved and graced with extraordinary koa, it is an inviting expression of Lowden’s artistry, ready for its next chapter in the hands of a player who appreciates both the finer details and the music they inspire.
