The Waldorf Iridium Desktop MK2 is the second generation of the highly acclaimed Iridium Desktop — a 16-voice, multi-timbral hybrid synthesizer that delivers the full synthesis architecture of Waldorf's flagship Quantum in a compact metal desktop format. Iridium Desktop MK2 is a new generation of the highly acclaimed Iridium Desktop introduced in 2020, used by countless artists and sound designers. Based on the legendary multi-engine design of the Quantum & Iridium product line, the MK2 innovates even further, fitting perfectly into Waldorf's forward-looking synthesizer design philosophy. The MK2 features a new and fresh design and an improved CPU board with more RAM and flash storage, allowing for more sample storage and opening a whole new world of synthesis capabilities — including the new Seeds engine created in collaboration with Aphex Twin.

Key elements of its design:

• Six-Mode Multi-Engine Oscillators Three stereo oscillators per voice can each run one of six synthesis modes: Wavetable (Waldorf's proprietary sweeping wavetables), Waveform (virtual analog), Particle (sample playback & granular synthesis), Resonator (physical modeling), Kernels (enhanced FM/phase modulation), and the all-new Seeds. Standard waveforms are joined by waveshaping options including Warp for dynamically morphing between waveforms.
• New Seeds Synthesis The extra RAM enables a sixth synthesis method per oscillator. Inspired by wavetable synthesis — where each wavetable represents a timbral journey — Waldorf found a way to base these journeys not only on static waveforms but to dynamically synthesize each waypoint from sub-oscillators called Seeds, incorporating all the other oscillator types.
• Per-Note Parameter Locks Made in collaboration with electronic music mastermind Aphex Twin and exclusive to the MK2, Per-Note-Parameter-Locks let you independently assign parameter values to each note of your connected MIDI keyboard or sequencer — fantastic for rich percussive passages, far-out soundscapes, and dramatic transformations.
• Flavour Micro-Variations Borrowed from Waldorf's Protein synthesizer, the Flavour control introduces micro-variations in timing, timbre, pitch, and other parameters, adding subtle movement and organic liveliness that keeps sounds fresh and dynamic as you play.
• 4-Part Multi-Timbral Thanks to the increased memory capacity, the multi-timbral layer count is raised from 2 to 4 parts. In addition to layered and split modes, the MK2 features advanced multi-timbral modes such as round-robin and random-robin for greater timbral richness and variety.
• Dual Stereo Filters & Digital Former Dual stereo filters per voice offer independent modes — 12/24 dB low-pass / high-pass / band-pass with Nave, Largo, PPG, Quantum, and State-Variable models — followed by a Digital Former processing stage for further sound sculpting.
• Deep Modulation & Performance Interface Six LFOs, six envelopes, and a comprehensive modulation matrix drive the sound, while a high-resolution display, tactile control knobs, a 16-pad touch matrix (with polyphonic sequencing), and MPE support make its fathomless tweakability easy to access.

Reviewing the launch, Synth Anatomy noted the Iridium MK2 is more than just a facelift — the official successor based on the same powerful multi-engine of the Quantum and Iridium line, with 98% of the controls the same apart from a few extras and a new color, but with the major upgrades taking place internally: a new SOM board with increased RAM and flash memory unlocking Seeds, per-note parameter locks, 4-layer multi modes, and the Flavour parameter.
