where home recording began to meet stage performance, and simple tools started shaping bold sounds.

The Sennheiser MD 400 builds directly on the concept of the earlier Sennheiser MD 200, but takes it a step further with a more focused, punchy response and noticeably higher output. Originally aimed at accessible recording and live use, it carries the same unmistakable Sennheiser engineering DNA — now with a stronger, more assertive voice that holds up surprisingly well in modern setups.

BUILD & DESIGN
The MD 400 retains the compact cylindrical format of the MD 200, but feels slightly more purposeful in its construction. The plastic grille and body keep it lightweight, but the black grill now hides a fine metal mesh helping with acoustic filtering and electric noise reduction around the capsule. Originally fitted with a consumer connector, This unit has been converted to XLR, allowing easy integration into modern studio and live environments.

Capsule
Dynamic capsule with an omnidirectional pickup pattern. Compared to the MD 200, the tuning feels tighter and more forward, contributing to its punchier character and stronger presence.

Circuit
Dynamic moving-coil design, passive operation, no internal amplifier. Output is unbalanced via modified XLR connection.

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS

  • Type: Dynamic
  • Polar Pattern: Omnidirectional
  • Frequency Response: approx. 60 Hz – 14,000 Hz (estimated, based on series characteristics)
  • Sensitivity: High output for its class
  • Output: Unbalanced XLR (modified)

SOUND CHARACTERISTICS

The MD 400 stands out as a noticeably more energetic and punch-driven evolution of the MD 200. It delivers a strong output level with excellent SPL handling, making it surprisingly capable in demanding situations.

The tonal balance leans toward a focused midrange with controlled lows and a slightly softened top end. This creates a dense, forward sound that cuts well through a mix without becoming harsh. Its nature still captures space naturally, but the voicing gives it more definition and impact than expected.

This makes it an extremely versatile “character mic” — equally at home in creative studio work or raw live-style recordings.

Examples of use:

  • Snare close-miking (punchy, controlled attack)
  • Vocals with a vintage, energetic tone
  • Guitar amp recording with natural compression feel
  • Room mic with strong mid presence
  • Reamping and creative saturation chains

FREQUENCY RESPONSE
Estimated Frequency Response:
60 Hz – 14,000 Hz

  • Forward midrange emphasis for punch and clarity
  • Gentle high-frequency roll-off above ~10–12 kHz
  • Controlled low-end with reduced sub-bass buildup
