Vintage Beyerdynamic M810n – The secret weapon for bass cabs

The Beyerdynamic M810N is one of those underrated West German dynamics that quietly does a lot of things right. With its solid black metal body and classic Beyer styling, it feels like the kind of microphone that was built to work first and impress later. And then you plug it in and realize: it does both. In many ways, it’s very close to the Beyerdynamic M81 in shape, size, specs, and overall sonic idea – but the M810N was positioned more as the professional tool, with a proper connector setup instead of a permanently attached cable. It’s also noticeably rarer than the M81, which makes it an even sweeter find if you know what these old Beyers can do.

Sound Character

Focused, punchy, and full of useful vintage character. The M810N has a great low end, present mids, and enough top-end reach to stay lively without turning brittle. On guitar amps it gives you bite and body in a very satisfying way, and on bass amps it’s a genuine secret weapon—bringing weight and definition without getting woolly. On toms and percussion it feels quick and articulate, and on acoustic guitar or general utility duties it brings that lovely “old German dynamic” sense of solidity. A very usable mic – with a bit more personality than you might expect from its modest looks.
