TEAC X-2000R BL — service completed 5/30/2026 by Wiktor Amps. All functions tested and passed with excellent results.

The TEAC X-2000R is widely regarded as one of the finest consumer reel-to-reel decks ever produced, featuring cobalt amorphous record and playback heads, dual capstan drive with full tension servo control, bi-directional record and playback, built-in dbx noise reduction, and TEAC's COMPUMATIC auto-locator system. This black (BL) example has been comprehensively serviced and calibrated by Wiktor Amps and is ready to perform for long term use.

Service performed includes: Complete mechanical and electrical calibration per service manual Brand new Athan pinch rollers installed Heads inspected and confirmed at approximately 90% remaining life with minimal wear FWD/REV solenoid switch replaced with Kurt Jacobs relay-controlled upgrade board (SWE1248K) — a well-regarded aftermarket improvement over the original ALPS switch for superior performance and long-term reliability All mechanical components cleaned and lubricated Motor playback speed set and verified against MRL calibration tape Head alignment confirmed

Calibration and performance: Calibrated to 185nW/m reference standard, ideal for both vintage professional and home-recorded tape playback Set up for Quantegy 456 tape; records flat (within ±1dB) to 15kHz and within ±3dB to 20kHz 0dB on the meter corresponds to -5dBm, suitable for both consumer hi-fi and semi-professional studio use Unity recording gain achieved with Input at 7, Output at 8

Additional notes: Multi-voltage unit (100/120/220/240V AC, 50/60Hz) with dedicated internal Voltage Selection PCB — operable worldwide with appropriate voltage selection Black (BL) finish in good cosmetic condition consistent with age Serial No. 220151
This unit was bench-tested on oscilloscope and distortion meters; please see YouTube link for video documentation:

From the owner's manual:
Description
The X-2000R incorporates a variety of functions and features including dbx noise reduction, an auto-locator function which is convenient in replay and editing and block-repeat. To maintain very stable tape motion with optimum tape tension, it uses a full tension servo control system in which a photo-interrupter senses the position of the tension arm so that the servo mechanism can adjust the torque of the reel motor. This mechanism eliminates the need for manual switching when using different types of reels. In the design of the electronic circuits the same concepts were applied, especially for the high level recording required by professionals. The X-2000R was the top of the line reel to reel model made by TEAC. 4 tracks, 2 channels, plays quarter inch wide tape and can play 7" and 10.5" reels. It has 6 heads (cobalt amorphous record and playback), fully bi-directional, 3 motors and dual capstan drive system (belt driven). Two speeds, 7.5 IPS (19 cm/s) and 3.75 IPS (9.5 cm/s), electronic real time counter (hour, minutes and seconds) and full tension servo control, which means that you can use any size of reel without adjusting the tension manually by a switch. It's one of the few machines that has a built-in decoder/encoder dbx type I professional noise reduction system. The transport function is computerized and includes return-to-zero, return-to-cue, program, repeat, set-cue and other features. Owner's manual is available via google search.
