Beloved by the Masters of Metal and Rock
The Explorer was first introduced in 1958. Although it wasn’t exactly received with enthusiasm at the time, over the years guitarists came to appreciate its many charms. In the 1970s, rock musicians were drawn to its futuristic shape and powerful sound. But it was especially in the hard rock scene of the ’80s that the model truly found its niche, played by some of the decade’s greatest guitarists. The new Explorer 80s EMG is based on the popular 1984 model. The 1984 Gibson Explorer is a cult electric guitar that stands out for its distinctive design and massive sound. Greats like The Edge, Billy Gibbons, and James Hetfield played the Explorer and contributed to its legendary status. If you’re into retro-futuristic guitars, the Explorer 80s EMG offers a tribute to the edginess and spirit of that era.
The Explorer 80s EMG features a fast-playing mahogany neck with a '60s SlimTaper profile. The neck is topped with a rosewood fingerboard featuring 22 medium-jumbo frets and simple Perloid dot inlays. The Explorer’s headstock is equipped with mini die-cast tuning machines and a Graph Tech nut, ensuring reliable tuning stability. The other ends of the strings pass over an Epiphone LockTone Tune-O-Matic bridge and are secured by a LockTone Stopbar tailpiece. The characteristically shaped mahogany body is equipped with active EMG pickups, featuring an EMG 60 in the neck position and an EMG 81 at the bridge. They capture precisely that unique, fat tone and rich sustain of the Explorer models, which were favored by numerous guitarists back in the day. A 9-V battery powers the active EMG pickups. The battery compartment is located on the bottom of the guitar, making it quick and easy to access. The pickups are wired to individual volume controls and a master tone control; the controls feature knurled metal knobs. There is no pickguard, which gives the Explorer 80s EMG a sleek and slightly menacing look. If you’re into retro-futuristic guitars, the Explorer 80s EMG pays homage to the edginess and spirit of that era. It comes in a premium gig bag and is ready to rock the world with you.
