This is a special one. I acquired it from the family of the original owner after he passed. This was a custom build by Michael Tobias himself. The owner had an import Grendel they loved, and they wanted a USA custom shop version of that bass. You can see from the included paperwork that this was a $7,500 build in 2011 money 15 years ago.
This bass has a few marks and very small dings, but it was mainly used in a home studio.
This is the lightest weight and most comfortable MTD I've had, it's absolutely killer. I'm not gigging 34" basses and this is too nice to keep around in the case.
8.1lbs and perfectly balanced - ergonomic dream for a 5 string MTD
Alder body
Maple neck
Wenge fretboard
- headstock has a matching wenge veneer
Luminlay side dots
34" scale
24 frets
47mm nut width
19mm string spacing
Double action truss rod
The original Bartolini pre is still in the bass but the Grendel style mid boost switch was swapped for a 3 way mid frequency selector.
Controls are:
Volume/Volume (stacked)
Mid
Treble/Bass (stacked)
Mid frequency selector toggle (3 way)
The custom would Bartolinis are more "MTDish" than barts in my other basses. They have much more upper end to them and a ton of snap. Very full range and not the typical darker/warmer barts.
No issues with the bass, the neck is perfect. Plays like a dream evenly up and down the fretboard.
The owner upgraded to a "custom" case which is a substantial and chunky MTD hard case. Bigger than any of my other cases, this thing means business and the lining is very plush. It's a bit over the top honestly.
This is a special one and can stay with me as long as it needs to, but I think it's perfect for someone out there who wants a 34" lightweight super jazz MTD.
