Is it inferior because it's a bolt-on?
Not at all!
The Standard Series offers the same Fodera sound, but with fixed specifications, making it more accessible to everyone at a lower price point.
Even though it's a standard model, people still want something a little different.
To cater to those desires, only authorized dealers can secretly request a "Special" version.
This Special is... not so special as it seems!?
At first glance, it looks rather plain...
Let's take a closer look at the details.
The body top is the classic walnut.
The specifications list it as "curly," but even from the front, it's quite subtle.
But if you take a closer look... and change the angle...
There are flame-like sections, and some sections that look slightly swirled like bubinga. Despite its understated appearance, it actually possesses a strong presence as a top wood.
Even so, compared to the understated top wood, the fretboard is subtly luxurious.
Currently, the standard fretboard is only available in rosewood or maple, but this time it's a beautiful bird's-eye maple.
Perhaps to match the simplicity of the top, a relatively simple bird's-eye maple was chosen.
And if you look even closer, you'll see that both the dot and side position markers are adorned with abalone, adding a touch of luxurious elegance.
While black would be functionally fine, these little decorations definitely give it a refined feel.
Matching this, the butterfly mark is also a delightful abalone feather.
Furthermore, there's one more detail that's not immediately obvious: the body back.
While a maple fretboard is typically paired with an ash body...
Upon closer inspection, you'll see it's a seamless, one-piece construction.
It's always a pleasure to see such thoughtful details, even on the standard models.
(Therefore, even with custom orders, it's sometimes best to leave it to the professionals.)
Other components, such as pickups and preamps, are the same as the standard model.
The rear pickup, when coil-tapped, will produce a 70s JB-style sound.
The sound is based on the easy-to-handle Emperor sound, with the excellent clarity of the ash and maple fretboard.
That being said, it also has a solid midrange, so you can rest assured that it will firmly support the band's bass even when fingerpicking.
As a 5-string bass that has already become a de facto standard, and with the crispness of a bolt-on neck that matches various genres, this is undoubtedly a great choice.
