CBS Laboratories FM Volumax 410 RECAPPED vintage discrete compressor limiter w/ transformers

Up for sale is a vintage CBS FM Volumax 410 that has been recapped and is in working condition. Yes it does sound good, especially on drums and it does get loud.

This is a relic from the 1960s that is solid state and discrete- no op amps in sight! Transformer balanced input and output (both 600 ohm) .

All electrolytic capacitors have been professionally recapped using only high quality Panasonic, Nichicon, & Rubycon capacitors. Of course the full bill of materials and paperwork explaining the work performed will be provided with the unit. The BOM is shown in the uploaded photos. Capacitors were ordered 1/2026 and the work was performed this month (2/2026).

Good reliable starting point for future mods or use it as it is. You do not have to worry about 60/50 year old caps failing!

Being a 60 year old unit, it does have some minor issues which I have explained to the best of my ability below

Cons

-Both input & output pots are scratchy at some point during their range of travel. You are able to settle on a good position on both the input and output pots that sounds good and isn't scratchy.

-Gain reduction meter operation is intermittent. Sometimes adjusting the input pot will cause it to work or not. Sometimes gently tapping will make it work or not work.

For the sake of expectations, consider the gain reduction meter not working.

-Gain reduction meter illumination bulbs are burnt out/ non-functioning

-Scratches on unit (See last 6 pictures for closeups of scratches)

-Slight noise with no input signal. This went away when a signal was fed into the unit and no noise was present during operation. This is most likely a ground hum from having both I/O grounds connected.
