This is a 1980's Burny RSG-75 '69 SG Standard model from Burny's Revival Series - made in Japan. This was Burny's take on the '69 style SG Standard with the big "batwing" pickguard and neck that joins the body at the 19th fret.
This Burny might have come from the factory with a serial number (or date code really) printed inside of the neck pickup cavity - but a previous owner has chiseled out the bottom of the pickup cavity - likely to make way for a deeper pickup. But this looks exactly like a 1987 Burny RSG-77 '69 model I had, so I'm guessing this one is at the latest 1988.
The finish on this guitar is the classic Cherry Red (CR) finish and it just looks amazing on this stripy mahogany body and neck. I've had a lot of cherry SG's from Japan, and I'd say that the colour that Burny used on this era, mid 80's, is one of the nicest cherry finishes.
This guitar is made from what appears to be a 2 piece centre seam mahogany body with a 1 piece mahogany set neck. It's also light at only 7.28lbs, making it a joy to play both sitting down and standing up.
The neck has a medium asymmetrical shape carve - it's thicker on the low E side, with the steeper shoulder, and more gradual flatter shoulder on the high E side. It's subtle, but I can feel it with my hands, and I can see it when measure the profile. This is the only Burny SG model I have owned with this profile - it's nice.
The neck is thin in width at the nut at just over 41mm, and it starts off at around 22.2mm in thickness at the 1st fret and gets up to 23.3mm at the 12th fret. Thanks to the narrower nut, it feels slim in the hand, and is a joy to play on.
The fretboard is a dark brown rosewood with a a beautiful grain all the way up the fretboard, with celluloid (or celluloid like) trapezoid inlays that have heavily yellowed over the years, matching the look and feel of the rest of the guitar. Personally, on a MIJ SG, I like the celluloid looking inlays over the acrylic pearloid, it looks more accurate to the models they are copying, and I think that the Burny models nailed these inlays the best out of all the brands.
They say the best guitars get played - and this one definitely has been played. The 22 medium jumbo frets have been played with fret wear across the entire fretboard, and heavier wear in the open chord area, as well as on the fretboard - but overall this guitar plays well up and down the entire neck with no dead spots or choking.
This Burny arrived to me with a pair of non original humbuckers, and damaged knobs. I had a set if vintage Burny L-8000 humbuckers in my parts bin that I installed a set of new 50mm nickel covers on (both 50mm spacing) that have been lightly relic'd to match the rest of the hardware and look of the guitar. I also installed a new set of Japanese made black top hat knobs (same as the originals).
Other than those 2 items, and a pair of newer locking strap buttons, everything else on this guitar appears to be original, and the guitar is in good players grade condition. There are a few of dings, dents, scratches, and chips all over the guitar, along with some light checking in the finish that is mainly on the sides of the body and on the back of the headstock by the volute.
The Burny L-8000 humbuckers sound great - coming in around a slightly hot P.A.F. 8.3K ohm range, with a standard thickness ceramic magnet, these pickups are powerful and bright. They handle the classic rock sound well, and sound great at full volume or turned down.
Like all the guitars I sell, I test, thoroughly clean, and setup my guitars completely before I list them. Anything that is missing, damaged, or non original is mentioned in the listing.
I setup all my Gibson style guitars to Gibson factory specs - including neck relief, action, pickup height, intonation, and tailpiece height. So this guitar will be ready to play out of the box (after you tune it up - I ship my guitars with the strings loosened).
Overall, this is a great player grade guitar, that has lots of mojo, is really light, and looks awesome.
If you're looking for a vintage Japanese SG with lots of mojo that can hang with the best of them, don't miss this one.
CONDITION ------------
Overall it's in good player grade shape.
I've tried to capture all of the flaws in the photos and in the description.
The pickups & covers, strap buttons, and knobs are not original.
The lower strap button has been repositioned and the original strap button hole is exposed.
The bottom of the neck pickup cavity has been chiseled out by a previous owner. I assume this was to make way for a larger/deeper humbucker/pickup. It does not affect the playability, structure, or sound of the guitar, and with the pickguard installed, there's no way to know.
Over the entire body of the guitar, top, back, sides, neck and headstock, there are dings, dents, scratches, chips, hazing, and swirling.
There is checking in the finish, mainly on sides of the body, and right on the back of the headstock around the volute.
There is a finish top coat crack (checking) on the back of the volute by the neck. This is only in the top coat finish - not in the wood. The headstock is solid, with no signs of a break or repair.
On the low E side of the neck binding, where neck meets the body, there is a small finish crack. The neck joint and binding are both solid.
There is some heavier buckle rash on the back of the body.
The nickel hardware, bridge, tailpiece, tuners, and screws all have some form of corrosion, pitting, scratches, and rust, but it all works as expected, and it has a nice patina that matches the "vibe" of the guitar.
All of the black plastics have many scratches and swirling on them.
All of the non branded nickel Japanese made Kluson style tuners are relatively straight and work as expected.
Around the strap buttons there's some strap marks/swirling.
The 22 medium jumbo frets have been played, and there is lots of play wear across the neck, more so in the open chord area (on the frets and the fretboard) - but overall the guitar plays well with no issues, no dead spots or choking.
There are no signs of a neck or heel repair, or any other repairs.
The truss rod works as expected with room in both directions.
