The 1940 Martin D-18 is a highly sought-after pre-war dreadnought, featuring an Adirondack spruce top and mahogany back/sides. Known for its “golden era” tone—balanced, woody, and punchy—1940 models (377 made) typically feature fully scalloped braces, a rear-shifted X-brace, and a 1 11/16″ neck.
This is a player’s grade that will make a prewar Martin drastically more affordable. It has pretty consistent overspray on 80% or so of the guitar, the bridge and plate are replacements, the tuning machines are replaced, there was a side crack repair that extends from the butt across the lower bout bass side and there are a couple of back cracks that have been addressed. The neck was reset at some point in its life and there appears to be a lot of residual glue on the inside. But the action is great, the playability is solid, the top is crack free, and the tone is glorious. Comes w/ modern HSC.
