The Martin Custom Shop, a division within the current Martin factory, utilizes its exceptional skills and extensive experience to craft exquisite guitars. This top-tier division produces highly refined custom models, including the Authentic Series, which has garnered significant attention in recent years. This instrument is a thoroughly customized CTM 00-12F Style-42 Highly Figured Koa, modeled after the 1919 OO-42. This pre-owned instrument was manufactured in 2014. It features premium-grade Hawaiian Koa wood with a figured grain pattern across the entire body. Features include a genuine mahogany neck, slotted headstock, 44.5mm nut, black ebony fingerboard and pyramid bridge, long saddle, snowflake fingerboard positions, Waverly Gold tuning machines, vertical headstock logo, ebony rod, and scalloped X bracing made from Adirondack spruce. Around 1919, steel strings were still rare, and gut strings were more common. Therefore, they featured the slotted headstock, rectangular bridge, and 12-fret joint commonly found on classical guitars. Instruments from this era are characterized by a very fast attack, a light touch, and a full, airy tone. This guitar was created to recreate the feel of that era, and its appearance is truly comparable to that of the original. The neck shape is a rounded V-shape, recreating the atmosphere of the time while providing a modern, easy-to-play grip. The tone is rich and sweet, characteristic of Hawaiian Koa. The crisp resonance and clear tone are exceptional. The wide headroom and spaciousness you'd expect from a 12-fret guitar will delight connoisseurs. The rich midrange and high-resolution sound bring out the instrument's unique qualities. On top of that, it boasts the harmonic overtones, vibrant tone, and enveloping tone characteristic of the 40s. The attack is fast and the tone is well-defined. However, the tone is well-balanced and thick, making it suitable for any playing style. Considering that instruments in 1919 were typically played with the fingers, this is a guitar that will appeal to fingerstyle players. There's a slightly larger cut at the end of the bridge near the 6th string, likely made during manufacturing, and some paint loss along the center seam of the top, but this does not affect playability. While this is unavoidable with ivoroid binding, there's some aging-related peeling in the binding, visible in four narrow spots and around the outer edge of the headstock, but it's been neatly repaired. There are also some light scratches visible against the light on the top of the body: one on the shoulder near the 6th string, one on the back of the headstock near the 4th string tuning peg, a small gap where the binding has shrunk, some light scratches near the 1st string side of the sound hole, and very light overall scuffs. However, the guitar shows minimal signs of use and is in excellent condition. Because it's made of ebony, there's a slight bow when tuning, but that's unavoidable. The string height is currently just right, and there's plenty of saddle rest left. This custom guitar is packed with attention to detail, and it's a reproduction that's comparable to an authentic guitar. It's great to look at, great to play, and you can even enjoy the unique tone of the koa wood as you play. Experience this quality for yourself.
