2007 Modulus Q5 Fretless
Blue burst over quilted maple
No-lines fretless graphite neck
EMG DC pickups, 18-Volts
On/off and pickup selector.
I bought the neck new in 2007 (with another body). The neck sat for years until I found another body for it last year. The 'newer' body is what you see here. I keep thinking, "Someday, I'm gonna sit down and learn to play fretless," but it never happens. So, it's for sale.
GOOD:
It boasts plenty of the coveted Modulus and fretless 'Mwah' sound, clearly accentuated by the composite neck, long scale, EMG DC pickups, and bright maple top laminate.
MAYBE:
The bass sounds great and plays fine. But IMO, it doesn't play "$3K top-tier bass" fine. The neck has a slight bow and may or may not need work, depending on your style.
New Modulus necks often warped over several years, as they cured completely. The solution is to have the neck planed flat after it has cured. Once this is done, the neck will remain perfectly straight forever.
A neck plane can be done for a couple of hundred bucks, and the difference is night and day (I've done it with three of my other Moduli). Without it, the bass plays fine, but if you want that action crazy low and perfect top-to-bottom, you should have it planed. Best $200 I ever spent, my others play the best of any basses I've played.
I can recommend two excellent luthiers to do the plane and setup if desired.
The body was repainted, with defects. I've tried to picture them adequately. 5 feet away, it looks great, and the front is in good shape with a couple of minor ripples. But on the back, there are paint repairs at the neck bolts, and some rippling defects. If you want showroom quality, you may wish to have it repainted. But if it's to be put to work, it's perfect.
BAD:
There's no bad. It's a great bass, and it's a Modulus.
ELECTRONICS:
EMG active DC pickups. The switches are on/off, and a 3-position pickup select switch. It sounds better and cleaner without the cheap EQ systems that came with these basses, IMHO. The extra holes are plugged, but still exist for whatever system you want to use.
This bass comes as pictured. THERE IS NO CASE. It will be wrapped and packed securely. The pricing reflects that the neck might need some work, and the finish has defects.
