1983 Greco Cougar 1 - natural

Here’s a rare one from the golden era of Japanese guitar craft! 

The Greco “Cougar” was made in 1983 as a limited run for the Mikasa music store. Only 50 Cougar 1 and 50 Cougar 2 were made.

The Cougar 1 features a mahogany body and neck with a spruce top. The fretboard is ebony with pearl bird inlays and fret-edge binding like Gibson. Pickups were Greco “Dry 82” which was their best pickup at that time. The bridge pickup on this guitar has been replaced by a Duncan Custom “DCJ” model, hand wound by Maricella Juarez. Great sounding pickups! The nut measures 1-11/16" and the scale length is 24-3/4".

Except for the bridge pickup the guitar is all original. It is wired for one volume control and tone controls for each pickup

This guitar functions perfectly with excellent tone and playability. It is capable of low action and has a great feeling medium neck. It balances well on a strap, stays in tune and is just a super cool axe!

Please take a look at the pictures and ask any questions you may have.  There are many nicks, scratches and dings as well as some discoloration of the spruce top. There is lacquer checking and some finish cracks on the neck that my luthier assures me are cosmetic only. A couple of the bird inlays have been repaired. I’m a pro player and have used the guitar for 5 years with never a problem. It’s like a Les Paul but better in some ways. Better upper fret access, contoured body, and not too heavy: 8.6 pounds. the quality is right up there with the best Greco “Super Real“ models that I’ve owned
