Mahogany is considered one of the most desirable hardwoods on the planet, and became very popular globally after being discovered in the Americas due to its magnificent grain pattern, durability, and rich reddish brown color.
In terms of its physical properties, Mahogany is widely coveted for its dimensional stability, which means it doesn't tend to warp or split, and this combined with its water and rot resistance has made it a favored material for use on boats. Mahogany is a fairly hard wood, with a Janka hardness rating of around 900 pounds. This means it is resistant to denting, scratching, and general wear and tear, making it an excellent choice for guitar picks.
Although Mahogany was overharvested in the past, the majority of Mahogany on the commercial market today is sustainably grown on tree plantations in Central and South America or in Asia.
