About The Material These Picks Are Made From:

Plectrums made from stone have been used traditionally throughout the world since the dawn of stringed instruments millennia ago.

Peruvian Sodalite is known for its rich, deep blue color and the beautiful patterns found in the stone. Sodalite is a tectosilicate mineral crystal named after its sodium content, and is related to and often confused with Lazurite and Lapis Lazuli. Sodalite was not scientifically discovered and defined until 1811 when deposits were found in Narsaq, Greenland. Its widespread use as a gemstone only began in 1891 when large high quality deposits were discovered near Ontario, Canada. Since then its popularity as a gemstone has continually increased.

Sodalite can be almost fully opaque or semi translucent, will often fluoresce orange under ultraviolet light, and can appear in several colors including pink, green, grey, or yellow, with its most common and desirable color being blue. High quality Sodalite has an amazing Royal Blue color which is typically mixed with white or light grey, and can appear in many interesting patterns.

Most of the highest quality Sodalite deposits occur in the Americas, with large deposits in northern parts of the USA and southern Canada. Smaller deposits of fine Sodalite are found in Peru, Brazil, and Bolivia in South America, as well as a few locations in Europe and parts of Asia.

Although Sodalite is a somewhat new gemstone in Europe and Asia, natives in South America have valued it for millennia, and there is evidence of ancient trading networks dealing in the valuable stone in prehistoric Peru as far back as 4,500 years ago. Since being discovered in the 19th century Sodalite has become popular for use in jewelry, beads, sculptures, rings, and other ornaments.
