This is a very rare Mosrite doubleneck with regular and octave necks made by Semie Moseley in memory of his great friend Joe Maphis who had passed away on June 27th, 1986. There are only 25 or fewer of these in existence and all were inscribed and signed on the back of the headstocks by Semie. Joe Maphis played for most of his career a doubleneck handmade for him by Semie Moseley with an octave neck (tuned one octave higher than regular guitar) in the upper position which gave kind of a mandolin sound. Mosrite made a few more of these over the years but when Maphis died these were put out as a tribute to him.
This one is all original in very good condition with the original (heavy duty) case. There are a few chips in the paint on the bottom and some light scratches, but nothing serious. It plays great and sounds fantastic and the only reason I am selling it that I am having one like it custom made by TNM Guitars. (Take a look at the website to see some amazing stuff being built the old way - by hand, one at a time.
Here is some info copied from the listing where I got it -

Specially Made in 1986 and Inscribed by Semie Mosely in Memory of his Dear Friend Joe Maphis.

Double Six string+Octave Guitar.

# JM O6 ' Joe Maphis double-neck (conventional six-string neck in the lower position combined with an octave six-string neck in the upper position) weighs 11.40 lbs. This guitar was specially made by Semie Moseley in 1986 and is inscribed by him on the back of each headstock. The regular six-string neck has a nut width of just over 1 11/16 inches, a medium profile and a scale length of 24 1/2 inches; the octave six-string neck has a nut width of 1 3/4 inches, a very fast thin profile and a scale length of 14 3/4 inches. Three-piece maple body with scalloped edge (15 inches wide and just over 1 3/4 inches deep) and a 7/8 inch wide. Two one-piece maple necks, both with single bound slab-rosewood fret boards. The conventional guitar has a zero fret + 22 original medium frets, small inlaid double & triple clay dot position markers and a white headstock decal "M Mosrite J.M. 65". The serial number "JM O6" is stamped in blind beyond the 22nd fret of the regular guitar. The octave guitar has a zero fret + 19 original medium frets and small inlaid double & triple clay dot position markers and a white headstock decal "M” MOSRITE / Joe Maphis". Both necks with unique Mosrite 'M' shaped headstocks with specific 'Maphis' inlays of white and black ivoroid plastic and individual 'Kluson Deluxe' tuners with oval metal buttons. One Mosrite 'humbucking' pickup with stained-maple surround.  Specific three-layer white over black plastic pickguard with decorative cut-outs and beveled edges

"J.M. 65 made in memory of my dear friend Joe Maphis Semie Moseley 1986". On the back of the octave guitar headstock written in pencil is: "Hand made by Semie Moseley for Joe Maphis with love Semie Moseley 1986" This amazing and very attractive two-tone sunburst instrument is in excellent condition with just a very light amount of fine finish checking and a few very small and insignificant surface marks. Housed in the original three-latch rectangular grey hardshell case with black leather ends and white plush lining.
This is perhaps the ultimate Mosrite collectible and a great player.
