The Boss HM-2W brings back the distortion that helped give Swedish death metal its unmistakable grind. If you’re shopping for this particular brand of ugliness, you already know: “heavy distortion” and that sound are not interchangeable.

Standard mode delivers the original HM-2 character with a lower noise floor and more output on tap—no vintage-pedal hunt required. Turn every knob up for the infamous chainsaw setting. No secret handshake. Just four knobs pointed toward trouble.

Custom mode pushes that same character harder, adding a little more gain, a sharper attack, and extra fullness and definition. It’s a second flavor of the same bad attitude, not a departure from what makes an HM-2 worth owning.

The Color Mix controls shape the low-end weight and midrange snarl in either mode. There’s more here than the everything-on-ten setting, but nobody’s going to blame you for starting there.

Plenty of pedals do heavy. This one does HM-2.
