There's something special about a well-loved vintage SG, and this 1972 Standard has plenty of character. The aged Walnut finish, natural checking, and decades of honest playwear give it a look that simply can't be replicated by a newer guitar.
Weighing just 7 lb 0.9 oz, this SG feels comfortable in the hands and plays beautifully. Its Gibson Tarback humbuckers are another great piece of its early-'70s character. It's a guitar that has clearly seen plenty of music over the years, with plenty more left to give.
Aside from a Japanese-made compensated stop tailpiece and installed strap locks, the guitar appears largely original. It comes with a period-correct hardshell case and is ready for its next owner.
Condition
Good. This guitar shows finish checking, clouding, chipping, scratches, and general cosmetic wear accumulated over its 54 years. It plays and sounds great, and the electronics function properly without scratchy pots or switches.
A note about the neck heel: There is an area of finish discoloration, checking, and deterioration around the neck heel, documented in the photographs. We examined the area under normal and UV lighting and sought a second opinion from an experienced vintage guitar dealer. No obvious evidence of a structural break was observed, and the neck feels stable. However, the exact cause of the finish disturbance is unknown, and previous localized touch-up or overspray cannot be ruled out.
We believe in being upfront about the condition of vintage instruments, and we'd rather provide too much information than leave a buyer with unanswered questions.
