The Tascam Portastudio 488 Mark 1 (originally released in 1991) is a landmark 8-track analog multitrack cassette recorder and integrated mixer. It squeezed eight independent audio tracks onto standard Type II (chrome) cassette tape by utilizing a highly specialized 2-head array, ultra-narrow track widths (0.25mm), and running at double the normal tape speed (9.5 cm/sec or 3.75 ips) to optimise fidelity and bandwidth.

 • Tape & Speed: Requires Type II High-Bias Cassettes only. It operates strictly at 9.5 cm/s (double speed), which increases frequency range but means you can only record on one side of the tape.

• Mixer Architecture: Offers a 12-input mixer routing to 8 tape tracks. Channels 1 and 2 feature mic/line trims, while the remaining inputs include line-only channels and two stereo returns.

• EQ & Routing: Fixed 2-band EQ (100Hz and 10kHz) with 12dB cut/boost. Audio routing relies on traditional bus assignment buttons (1/2 and 3/4) paired with the pan pot to direct audio to odd or even tracks.
