The Details
Now here's a bass with some serious musical pedigree - the first-generation Sire Marcus Miller V7 5-String brings together the timeless appeal of the classic Jazz Bass and the extraordinary tonal versatility that has made Marcus Miller one of the most influential bass players of the modern era.
Finished in a glorious three-tone tobacco sunburst, this handsome instrument features an ash body with attractive visible grain, a maple neck and matching maple fingerboard adorned with elegant pearloid block inlays. The traditional double-cutaway body, pearloid pickguard and chrome hardware create a wonderfully sophisticated appearance, with just the right amount of vintage swagger.
The V7 is renowned for offering exceptional value and impressive attention to detail, and its first-generation incarnation remains particularly appealing to players who appreciate the original Sire design.
At its heart are two Marcus Super-J Revolution single-coil pickups, delivering the familiar warmth, definition and expressive growl of a traditional Jazz Bass. Whether you're after smooth, rounded fingerstyle tones, punchy picked lines or that wonderfully articulate slap sound associated with Marcus Miller himself, there's an enormous amount of musical territory to explore.
The real magic lies in the Marcus Heritage-3 preamp, which offers a remarkably flexible set of tone-shaping controls. With three-band active EQ, sweepable midrange, pickup blending and an active/passive switch, this bass can move effortlessly from old-school warmth to bright, cutting modern tones. The passive mode is particularly useful when a more traditional, straightforward Jazz Bass response is required.
The five-string configuration adds a powerful low B, providing an extended range for contemporary playing styles without compromising the familiar feel and balance of a classic J-style instrument.
This example features a substantial chrome bridge with individual saddles, open-gear tuning machines and a comfortable contoured body. The maple neck has a glossy finish on the reverse, while the fingerboard's rolled edges are designed to provide a smooth, comfortable playing experience.
Cosmetically, the bass presents very attractively, with a rich, glossy sunburst finish and some light marks and signs of normal handling, particularly around the black control plate and hardware. The original pickups, controls, pearloid pickguard and distinctive Sire headstock branding are all present.
A superbly versatile five-string bass with classic looks, a formidable tonal palette and the unmistakable influence of Marcus Miller. From deep pocket grooves to lightning-fast slap excursions, this is a bass that positively encourages musical adventure.
