1918 Gibson A Model Mandolin - Natural

For Sale, 1918ish Gibson A Model mandolin. Parts of the original label is torn away. This mandolin is a really good playing and sounding mandolin (for real) in spite of having lived a troubled life. The finish has been stripped and it appears it has been coated with possibly a thin coat of sealer to protect the wood. The finish would require nothing more unless you simply wanted it to appear shiny or stained. The solid Spruce top is in great shape with no belly sinkage or cracks. The neck angle and top still hold very near the original specifications because with the original bridge, the string action is very good. The tail piece appears to be original but the cover has been painted black. Tuners are original and work very smoothly. Frets appear to be original and have some wear but there is still plenty meat on them for a couple dressings in the future. The Ebony Fingerboard is good and has never been shaved or thinned and without divots. The neck heel has an old crack repair that is structurally very sound. The ebony nut has been replaced. The Solid Birch back has 2 pretty good size cracks but also appears stable. There are a couple areas around the edge where the back has been re-glued.With all that said, this mandolin is a survivor. It really seems to be completely, structurally stable and sounds like a hoss and plays great. I think I would play it just as it is because of the excellent player it is but one could do cosmetic work on it if you don’t like seeing its war wounds. It reminds me of an old Boxer who has plenty scars but can knock you out in a heartbeat when the Bell rings. And oh yes, there has been a diamond embedded in the peghead face. I can’t guarantee it is real �". It comes shipped in a newer case. I also have a number of other Gibson A mandolins. I believe the new owner will be pleasantly surprised with the sound and action if you buy it simply for what it was intended. An opportunity to get a good player Gibson A at less than half price.
