The “PB70-70US” is a 1970s-style Precision Bass crafted by Fender Japan. Featuring an alder body and USA-made pickups—specifications reflected in the “US” in its model name—this is a standout instrument. The model we’re featuring here was manufactured around 2002–2004, and it’s one we’d like to highlight for anyone looking for a Japanese-made Fender Precision Bass.

The body is made of alder, the neck of maple, and the fingerboard of rosewood—a classic combination of materials familiar to Precision Bass players. The balanced tone characteristic of alder is complemented by the clear attack of the maple neck and the moderate warmth of the rosewood fingerboard. This configuration delivers solid, rich low end while maintaining a defined midrange; its simplicity allows the instrument’s natural sound to shine through.

It is equipped with a U.S.-made split-coil pickup. Centered around a rich, full-bodied low end, it also delivers a strong presence in the midrange, producing the direct sound characteristic of a simple single-pickup configuration. It makes it easy to achieve a cohesive, full-bodied tone when fingerpicking and a crisp, attack-driven sound when playing with a pick, faithfully reflecting the nuances of your playing style.

Visually, it features a simple, classic design characterized by an Olympic White body paired with a rosewood fingerboard. As this instrument was manufactured in the early 2000s, it now shows signs of wear typical of a well-played vintage instrument, including scratches and dents on the body, cracks and chips in the finish, as well as tarnish, rust, and peeling plating on the metal parts. The combination of the Olympic White finish and these signs of aging gives the instrument a distinctive character unique to a well-played, pre-owned instrument.

As for its condition, while there is visible cosmetic damage due to use and aging as described above, there is no significant damage that would interfere with playability. The strap pins have been replaced, but there are no other modifications. Approximately 80% of the frets remain. The truss rod has ample adjustment range in both the tightening and loosening directions and functions properly.

In addition to its ease of play—thanks to classic wood materials and a simple construction—the unique character of its appearance, developed over more than 20 years, is a defining feature of this instrument. We hope you’ll take this opportunity to consider it.
