2019! I've had three newer Novos, and they're good but there is a very noticeable difference in quality and attention to detail here during the "clay dot era" of 2019 when they were making a wayyyyy smaller number of guitars and Dennis Fano was probably a lot more involved with every guitar. The attention to detail, the quality of the lacquer checking and aging, the overall gestalt of the guitar is tangibly better on this than the newer ones — you'd be able to tell blindfolded. Balances perfectly, very lightweight (everyone who picks it up is blown away by that, since it's a pretty large slab body [tone!] but the guitar weighs 7lbs), the Fralins are maybe my favorite pickups ever (they're technically split coil P90s, to me they sound like WRHBs with more mids), I upgraded the bridge to a Ron Thorn "Brass Knuckle" which is just so solid and increased the sustain and snappiness noticeably (original bridge/saddles included), the firestripe pickguard was an upgrade that's no longer offered and is sooooo thicc and 3D in the light. And the light relic is extremely detailed and tasteful, it just looks authentic in a way newer ones kinda don't — I don't see too many new ones with the kind of detailed lacquer checking this one has.
As I'm typing this, I'm basically convincing myself to keep it haha. But I'm finally coughing up and buying some pre-CBS Fenders before those become fully unattainable forever, and this one just isn't getting played as much as it deserves. This could be someone's #1!
