Deering Calico Custom Tenor Banjo with Gold-Plated Hardware and Hardshell Case

Offered for sale is an exceptionally beautiful and finely appointed Deering Calico Tenor Banjo. This four-string resonator banjo features a 19-fret tenor neck and combines selected tonewoods, elaborate decoration and the precise craftsmanship for which Deering is renowned.

According to Deering’s official numbering system, the serial number 0990407-K536 dates the instrument to September 2007.

The highly figured maple used for the neck and resonator is particularly impressive. Its warm, luminous honey-to-reddish-brown high-gloss finish beautifully highlights the lively, almost three-dimensional grain of the wood.

The dark fingerboard is decorated with elaborate floral mother-of-pearl inlays. The headstock also features intricate inlay work, the characteristic Deering logo and light-coloured tuner buttons. Cream-coloured binding provides an elegant contrast to the warm tone of the wood.

A special feature of this high-grade custom version is its gold-coloured or gold-plated hardware. The richly engraved armrest, decorated tailpiece and elaborately pierced flange give the instrument an exclusive and distinctive appearance. The transparent banjo head provides a clear view of the beautifully figured wood inside the resonator.

The Calico Tenor offers a quick response, clear highs, a well-defined bass and balanced projection across the entire fingerboard.

The banjo is in very good and exceptionally well-maintained used condition. The wooden surfaces, inlays and hardware present beautifully. Only minor signs of age or use may be present. Please study the detailed photographs carefully, as they form part of the condition description.

The instrument comes with a high-quality, fitted black hardshell case with dark green plush lining and gold-coloured latches. The case shows normal signs of age, use and transport but continues to provide reliable protection for the instrument.

A new standard-version Deering Calico 19-Fret Tenor Banjo currently costs approximately USD 5,999. A comparable custom-built version with gold-plated and engraved hardware would likely cost approximately USD 7,000 to 8,000 or more if ordered new today.

Taking into account its rare tenor configuration, high-grade custom appointments, very good condition and included case, its realistic current second-hand value is approximately €3,800 to €4,800.
