A wonderfully worn, vintage-style look! The 500/1 Vintage 63.
Founded in Germany in 1887 by Karl Höfner, this storied maker is one of Europe's leading string instrument brands. Building on its refined classical instrument craftsmanship, it began producing electric guitars and basses in the 1950s. The 500/1, released in 1956, became world famous once Paul McCartney adopted it as his own.
This example is a 2004-built 500/1 Vintage 63, faithfully recreating the especially popular 1963 specification among the many vintage variants.
A wonderfully faded, moderately worn finish. This is a player's-condition example — the pickguard and knob tops are missing, and the rear pickup surround is cracked — but there's no damage to the woodwork, and it's still very much ready for frontline use.
Action is set to roughly 2.8mm at the 12th fret. There's no neck warranty, but we'd consider this an acceptable action height for a violin bass.
The warm, soft low end produced by its lightweight hollow body is the quintessential Höfner sound.
