Since its introduction in 1996, the Ibanez j.custom has remained one of the brand’s flagship guitar lines.

As a true custom guitar, the j.custom is designed to meet the diverse playing styles and individual demands of today’s guitarists, resulting in instruments that offer an exceptional level of craftsmanship, character, and versatility.

We’re very pleased to finally have a j.custom 7-string in stock—these are not easy to come by!

The flame figuring across the upper portion of the body runs remarkably straight from side to side, boldly showcasing exactly what you want to see from a beautiful piece of flame maple. There is something especially captivating about figuring that is this clean, focused, and perfectly aligned.

The intensity and depth of the figuring are also exceptionally well balanced. The upper and lower sections of the body display dramatically different patterns, giving the guitar a wild yet refined overall appearance. This is truly a spectacular example—and honestly, one we’d be tempted to keep for ourselves!

While personal taste certainly plays a part in our enthusiasm, we feel it may be quite some time before another j.custom with figuring of this caliber comes through our doors. If you’re looking for an exceptionally figured flame maple example, this is one we highly recommend.

The finish is Black Rutile. We looked into the meaning behind the name “Rutile” and found that rutile is one of the crystalline forms of titanium dioxide, known in Japanese as kinseki (金紅石). Quartz containing these distinctive black, needle-like crystals is commonly referred to as “black rutile.” Looking at the flame figuring set against this near-black, grayish finish, it is easy to see where the name comes from. The combination of the shimmering flame maple and the cool, understated color is simply outstanding.

For the pickups, this guitar is equipped with a 7-string version of DiMarzio’s classic PAF-style pickup. Compared with many pickups commonly found on modern-style guitars, its output is relatively moderate.

This makes it an excellent match not only for high-gain tones, but also for the warm, rich clean and crunch sounds produced by the mahogany back and maple top. Seven-string guitars are often equipped with high-output pickups designed specifically for extreme high-gain applications, with an aggressive character and pronounced, metallic high end. This j.custom takes a different approach.

Rather than relying on sheer pickup output, this instrument gives the impression that the goal was to maximize the natural “voice” and resonance of the guitar as a whole. It is a remarkably versatile instrument that can excel across a wide range of genres, and it truly embodies the spirit and prestige you would expect from a flagship model.

We highly recommend giving this guitar a try even if you’re not primarily a metal or rock player. This is a 7-string that offers far more than just high-gain performance—it is an exceptionally versatile, beautifully crafted instrument with an unmistakable j.custom character.
