Classic early-90s Ernie Ball Music Man StingRay, made in San Luis Obispo, California during the early EBMM years, when these basses still retained a very raw, mechanical and immediate StingRay character.
This particular instrument was manufactured on September 19th, 1991 according to the Ernie Ball Music Man serial database. Factory markings on the neck and body date to August 12th and 13th, 1991.
The bass is acoustically very resonant and lively — a proper old-school StingRay with fast attack, deep lows, strong low-mid character and extremely direct response under the fingers. Sustain is excellent across the neck and the instrument has that addictive “alive in your hands” response associated with early Ernie Ball Music Man instruments.
Visually, this one has aged beautifully:
- naturally worn satin feel on the neck
- nicely figured birdseye maple neck and fretboard
- attractive natural patina throughout
- nicely aged original hardware
- classic Natural finish with black guard
An excellent original example with honest age-related wear and strong overall vintage presence.

- naturally worn-in neck feel from decades of playing
- light aging and patina on the hardware
- minor scratches and edge wear
Importantly:
- neck is stable
- truss rod functions properly
- electronics work as intended
- bridge string mute operates correctly
- no structural repairs or breaks visible
Everything appears original, including the hardware, electronics and pickup configuration.
The wear gives the instrument a genuinely authentic broken-in feel while still presenting as a very clean and well-preserved vintage StingRay.
Notes
This is a very strong example from the early Ernie Ball Music Man period — before later production became more standardized in feel and voicing. Early-90s StingRays are increasingly appreciated for their resonance, immediacy and unmistakably mechanical response.
