Video: Using Effects With Acoustic Guitars & Hybrid Acoustics

We all know electric guitars and effects go together like fries and ketchup, but acoustic guitars and pedals can be a tasty combination too.

A traditional acoustic without any kind of built-in electronics will, of course, pose some problems, so you'll at least need to add an aftermarket soundhole or undersaddle pickup to start. But with the wide array of acoustic-electric hybrids and next-level hybrids like the Fender Acoustasonic series guitars, you likely have everything you need already to experiment.

In our video above, Andy Martin uses an Acoustasonic Player Telecaster—Fender's new, more affordable version of its best-selling American Acoustasonic Telecaster—and a more standard Guild F-20 acoustic outfitted with a DiMarzio soundhole pickup.

From there, he's off to the races.

With the Acoustasonic Player Telecaster, Andy toggles between its dreadnought and parlor sounds, as well as its lo-fi piezo pickup and Noiseless Tele pickup, using various effects and effect combinations:

  • The Fuzzlord Drone Master and Hologram Microcosm
  • Fairfield Circuitry About 900
  • SolidGoldFX Lysis II
  • Thorpy Effects Pulse Doppler and Gamechanger Light Pedal
  • Boss VB-2w Vibrato, Boss SY-1 Synth, and Sehat Effectors Masjidil Echo

With the Guild acoustic, Andy explored some different sonic territory:

  • Benson Preamp, Crazy Tube Circuits Memphis Vibrato, and TEFI Delaylab Ms. Delayette
  • TEFI Delaylab Ms. Delayette, Pogo Modern Fuzz, and DyBell Unit67 Comp/EQ

No matter what combination of acoustic guitar and effects you use, it's a new approach that can result in some great, unique sounds.
