The 2016–2018 “reissue” Gibson Les Paul Voodoo is one of those strange modern Gibson runs that quietly became collectible because almost nobody expected it to. Strictly speaking, it wasn’t a historic reissue in the Custom Shop sense — it was more of a revival of the early-2000s Voodoo concept, brought back by Gibson as a limited USA production model.
The original Voodoo series from the early 2000s was Gibson doing something deliberately darker and more alternative than a Standard or Custom with: unusual woods; satin finishes; blacked-out hardware; occult / tribal styling and lighter weight. The 2016 version kept the spirit but updated the recipe. Unlike a normal Les Paul, it dropped the classic mahogany/maple formula and went with: Swamp ash body (lighter and snappier); Maple neck; Richlite fingerboard; Black chrome hardware; Rounded Les Paul neck profile; Satin nitro finish and Voodoo humbuckers (Alnico II)
The JuJu finish is a really cool feature. The original early-2000s Voodoo used an Ebony finish rubbed with red grain filler. The 2016 return flipped the visual treatment into what Gibson called a reverse JuJu finish — dark body with red grain highlighting that gives it that scorched / volcanic look under light – one of those finishes that looks better in person that can be reproduced on pictures.
A relatively light Les Paul, genuinely different from the rest of Gibson’s catalogue both in looks and sound, this 2018 model is in great condition with only a little play wear on the body next to the high e (see last picture). The guitar comes complete with its very cool black/red snakeskin style Gibson hard case, original Gibson strap and its baby picture.
