The Swart MOD 84 is a 15W hand-wired tube combo amplifier, featuring a push-pull output stage with two EL84 tubes in cathode-biased configuration. The circuit is entirely point-to-point, designed to maximize dynamic response, headroom, and interaction with the musician’s touch.
The preamp section uses 12AX7 and 12DW7 tubes, while rectification is handled by a GZ34/5Y3 tube, contributing to a resilient response (sag) and natural compression under load.
Tone control is implemented via a 3-position selector switch that modifies the circuit’s voicing, directly interacting with gain and frequency response. Hi/Lo inputs are provided to optimize matching with different pickup output levels.
The spring reverb is driven by a dedicated tube circuit, offering a more organic response compared to classic solid-state circuits. The tremolo is also fully tube-driven, with deep and progressive modulation, controllable via footswitch.
Tone-wise, the MOD 84 sits between American and British voicings: tight lows, articulate mids, and extended highs with the pronounced “chime” typical of EL84s. Breakup occurs gradually and musically, with overdrive rich in even harmonics and excellent definition even on complex chords.
The cabinet is made of solid finger-jointed pine, contributing to the overall resonance of the system.
