The koto is a traditional plucked string instrument like the shamisen. Shaped like a long zither, it is commonly referred to as the "Japanese harp" in reference to the melodious sound it produces. It is a typical musical art of Japan. it is a lute with a long neck and a smooth fingerboard.

Traditionally, the koto is played seated in a formal kneeling position (the so-called seiza posture), with the instrument placed horizontally on the ground. However, since the westernization of Japan in the Meiji era (from 1868), koto can be played on a table while standing.
Left-handers should play the koto with the right hand (there is no suitable version, like guitars or other stringed devices)
