About Jay Skeg's Gear Exchange

I’m a husband, a dad, and an aging punk rocker who’s been playing guitar since I was a kid. Like a lot of folks, I started selling gear just to fund new projects without dipping into my paycheck. Over time, it’s turned into more than that. I love buying, selling, and trading—always aiming to keep prices fair and standing behind everything I sell.

I honestly believe the world would be a darker, emptier place without music. Life wouldn’t be worth living without it. Music expresses every emotion we’re capable of, and it’s one of the first treasures humans passed down. It’s a blessing, a gift, and one of our greatest accomplishments as a species.

Before I met my wife and we had our beautiful daughter, music was the only thing that truly mattered to me. It gave me belonging, purpose, and identity. Since I was young, my goal was simply to be part of the music world in any way I could. Even working in a record store felt like it would have been an honor.

These days, I’m lucky enough to have a calling I believe in—I’m a Special Education teacher. But I’ve also been able to play in bands, book shows, and even run a little “record label” of sorts. My dream was to own a music shop where I could sell guitars and gear while talking music with folks all day. This exchange isn’t exactly that dream—but it’s turned into something even better: a true community.

I’m not in it for the money. If I were, I’d have quit ages ago. I lose money on most deals, and the rare profit usually just covers the next loss. I do this for the love of music, the people who make it, and the gear that makes it possible. Ask my customers—they’ve gotten world-class gear for prices that make no sense.

I buy “lots” of gear and price things based on the average cost of the batch. Some pieces are higher, some lower—it’s just what the market can bear. Once I’ve covered the cost of a lot, prices drop. I’m always open to negotiation, and I’ll never turn down an interesting trade. My goal is to keep the cycle going and constantly reinvest in new gear.

Maybe this shop will help spark the next Uncle John’s Band, Misty Mountain Hop, TV Party, Waiting Room, One, Angel of Death, Exodus, Hey Jude, Baba O’Riley, or The Times They Are A-Changin’. Or maybe it’ll just help a bunch of people keep rockin’. Either way, that’s enough for me.

Amp Sales-I don't sell many amps but when I do they are in perfect working order and they leave my home well packed and safe for their journey. Amps can be tough as things can be loosened as they travel. If there is an issue that happens in traveling, this will be solved by using REVERB insurance which I always purchase. If it is something simple, I will work with you to fix it.
