So, eleven years into the process of making guitars, my 350 hand carved instruments have found homes in Canada, Mexico, France, Russia, Japan, Spain, Switzerland, Finland, and 30 states. I am an Alaskan woodworker who enjoys playing guitars and working with guitars. I build custom electric guitar bodies mostly from the wood that comes from our temperate rainforest on the Northwest Coast. Made with mostly hand tools, they are not factory-or-CNC perfect, just unique heritage instruments intended for a long life of regular playing. (The featured video is from four years ago, so the guitar numbers are off, but the sentiment is the same.)
I select wood for its appearance and tone, celebrating the history and experience of each streak, ripple, and wave that surfaces as I work to let the character of the wood guide the shape of the guitar. As for tone, I often match the sharply responsive maple with a warmer mahogany, primavera, or yellow cedar. After hours of sanding it smooth, I gently apply just enough oil to protect and preserve the result. Very few of the 350 guitars I have made are painted. Covering the colorful natural wood with paint is to me a sacrilege, as well as dampening and muffling resonance and sustain. I understand the economics of the factory companies; painting allows the use of inexpensive wood and the covering of defects.
