The tape echo was the first effects unit capable of producing an echo effect, and its warm, dynamic sound captivated many musicians. A tape echo is a machine with an extremely simple structure: a motor rotates magnetic tape, a recording head records a phrase, and a playback head produces the echo sound. As a result, it is highly susceptible to structural factors, and the sound changes depending on its condition, the motorfs rotation speed, and the amount of friction. This also adds a pleasant, subtle fluctuation to the sound. Original tape echoes are rarely found on the market. This RE-101 was sold as an affordable version of the legendary RE-201. While it lacks EQ and spring reverb, its tape section is equivalent to the RE-201, making it a simple and easy-to-use echo unit.
