The Gibson SJ-200 has spent generations earning its title as the "King of the Flat-Tops," combining an unmistakable visual presence with the scale, projection, and authority expected from a flagship acoustic. Gibson's Super Jumbo story reaches back to the pre-war era, but the model had developed a particularly recognizable identity by the 1950s, appearing in the hands of prominent country, western, and popular performers while becoming a symbol of Gibson acoustic craftsmanship. The Gibson Custom Shop 1957 SJ-200 looks directly to that celebrated period, recreating the character of a late-'50s example through historically inspired materials, construction, and appointments.
A Super Jumbo body gives this guitar the physical foundation for the large, confident voice that has long distinguished the SJ-200. Its thermally aged Sitka spruce top is designed to offer an open, responsive character, while hand-selected flame maple back and sides contribute clarity, definition, and projection. Traditional hand-scalloped X-bracing assembled with hide glue further connects the instrument to vintage Gibson building methods. The result is a broad and powerful acoustic voice with firm lows, articulate mids, clear highs, and enough headroom to stay composed when driven by a strong picking hand.
That combination of power and definition has made the SJ-200 especially effective as a rhythm instrument. Big open chords sound expansive without losing their individual notes, while the maple construction helps keep the response focused when strumming aggressively. Country, Americana, folk, rock, western, and singer-songwriter players should find plenty to appreciate here, and its ability to produce a large, well-defined acoustic sound also makes it a natural candidate for studio work. With no onboard pickup system, this particular 1957 SJ-200 recreation keeps the emphasis entirely on the instrument's natural acoustic voice.
The experience extends well beyond tone. A rounded two-piece maple neck, 25.5" scale, and 12" radius rosewood fingerboard provide a substantial yet approachable platform, accented by mother-of-pearl graduated crown inlays. The famous Four Bar Moustache bridge, cast SJ-200 pickguard, gold Gotoh Keystone tuners, multi-ply body binding, and distinctive headstock stinger complete a presentation worthy of Gibson's flagship flat-top. Finished in thin VOS-treated nitrocellulose lacquer, this Custom Shop 1957 SJ-200 captures the appeal of a well-preserved vintage instrument while remaining ready to become a working guitar in its own right. Available now at Haggerty’s Music, this Custom Shop beauty ships with a hardshell case for convenient transport and premium protection.
