Overview

The Electro-Harmonix Big Muff is one of the all time classic effects pedal. Introduced in the early '70s, the Big Muff has undergone a number of cosmetic changes, but its circuitry and classic fuzz tone have remained largely the same. After the early '70s "Tri-Muffs" and the mid-'70s "Ram's Head" Muffs, this late '70s iteration (V4/5) - sometimes called the Op Amp Muff - finally cemented the template now used for the modern reissue. This particular model was famously used by Billy Corgan with The Smashing Pumpkins to create their "wall of guitars" sound.

  • Cool addition to the big muff collection.

Definitely rocking some vintage vibe, but the new op-amp reissue pretty much nails the pumpkin tone for less than a bill, and 1/3 the real estate. Not a ton of usable tones.

Please see kitrae's Bug Muff page for thorough documentation. The V3 with a 3003 circuit board is superb. The early ones still have the irregular knob positions with the pointer knobs instead of the hockey pucks and that classic sound from the Ram's Head graphic. No tone bypass either and instead have the On/Off switch. Killer tone for a fraction of the V2 cost... for now.

  • EH Big Muff 3034 v6 1981

There is no reissue or mod that truly recreates the grit of this pedal. Though the 3034 isn’t quite a legendary version, it is a fine fuzz pedal.

More Information

The Electro-Harmonix Big Muff is one of the all time classic effects pedal. Introduced in the early '70s, the Big Muff has undergone a number of cosmetic changes, but its circuitry and classic fuzz tone have remained largely the same. Original production ended in 1984 when Electro-Harmonix went out of business, though many clones and copies were produced by other companies. Production started up again in 1996, though the earliest Big Muffs are of the most interest to collectors.  Even in the earliest era of Big Muffs, there was a good deal of variation in the chassis and design. Early '70s editions with the EHX Rams Head logo are among the most sought-after.
