Reverend Airwave 12-String in Black Sparkle

The Reverend Airwave has always swept the board when it comes to electric 12-string guitars, displaying a depth of consideration in every design detail far beyond other offerings at a similar price-point, or even considerably higher. It was essential, therefore, that any refresh maintained the aspects of the original model which made it great, most notably the approachable playability, versatility and individually string intonatation for flawless tuning.

Thankfully, all these aspects are present and correct in this latest model; the 45mm nut and medium oval neck feel as good as ever, while Reverend’s bass contour allows the pickups to shape-shift between warm P90 tone, bright single-coil chime, and everything inbetween. As before, the string-thru-body bridge with aluminum ferrule block allows precise intonation of each string.

From here, the Airwave 12 has received a thorough make over, with upgrades to the body materials and pickups improving both tone and usability. Mahogany replaces the original Korina for both the semi-hollow body and 3-piece set neck, pairing with the solid Spruce top to produce and more balanced fundamental tone.

The Steelhead P90 pickups are also brand new, having been designed from the ground up by Reverend design guru, Joe Naylor. These pickups feature oversize steel poles, which boost upper frequency response and headroom, for enhanced harmonics and responsive pick attack. Sidewinder coil construction features two matched coils which cancel the annoying hum common with traditional designs. The coils are turned sideways, allowing both magnets to be focused on a single row of steel poles, yielding the single-coil snap and punch you expect from a P90.

As with every Reverend, the Airwave benefits from high grade components, even when they’re out of sight. More consistent +-10% rated pots and caps are used (compared to +-20% pots and caps used on most guitars), while the Pure Tone jack socket has dual contacts for improved grip, audio signal and reliability. A treble bleed circuit preserves the treble when you roll back the volume control, while the boneite nut reduces friction, allowing the strings to slide through the nut slots smoothly, improving tuning stability.
